Frequently Asked Questions about Greek Life at UNCW

When is IFC recruitment?

While recruitment dates vary from year to year, the Fall 2020 recruitment dates are set as August 19th-28th

How will joining a Fraternity affect my studies?

Fraternities serve as a great resource for students academically through study hours and tutoring programs. Most chapters require a high grade point average for initial membership into the organization. Here at UNCW, the average GPA for those in a Fraternity was higher than those not in a fraternity during the Fall 2019 semester.

What about pledging and hazing?

All new fraternity and sorority members experience a period of orientation. During this time, new members will meet to learn about the fraternity’s local and national history as well as the active brotherhood. They may participate in community service projects and activities designed to build friendships among new members and initiated members.

University of North Carolina Wilmington has a zero-tolerance policy regarding hazing that is consistent with state law in North Carolina. Hazing includes any activity that subjects members to harassment, ridicule, intimidation, physical exhaustion, abuse, or mental distress. Hazing is contrary to the purposes of the fraternity and sorority community and the University; therefore, it is not tolerated.

How expensive is it?

The perception that fraternities and sororities are only an option for “rich” students is widespread and false. Greek organizations are quite affordable and fees go towards services and events that will positively impact your child. Each chapter is self-supported through dues charged to all members. Also, chapters have payment plans that can be arranged to reduce to ease that responsibility.

What is a bid?

A “bid” is an invitation to membership in a fraternity.  If a fraternity gives you a bid however, it does NOT mean that you are obligated to join that fraternity right away. It is possible to get multiple bids from different fraternities during the recruitment process.

Who is eligible for recruitment?

All incoming freshman to UNCW are eligible to join a fraternity in their first semester. People who transfer into UNCW are also eligible for Fall 2020 recruitment and can receive and accept a bid from a fraternity.

Do I have to join a fraternity in the fall?

No. While Fall recruitment tends to draw a high number of participants, there is opportunity to join a fraternity at the beginning of the Spring Semester as well.
